3 therefore, do whatever they teach you and follow it; but do not do as they do, for they do not practice what they teach. 3Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example. For they preach but they do not practice.3 all things therefore whatsoever they bid you, these do and observe: but do not ye after their works; for they say, and do not.3 You must therefore do what they tell you and listen to what they say; but do not be guided by what they do: since they do not practice what they preach. 3 So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, [that] observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
4 They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on the shoulders of others; but they themselves are unwilling to lift a finger to move them. 4 They tie up heavy burdens [hard to carry] and lay them on people's shoulders, but they will not lift a finger to move them.4 Yea, they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with their finger.4 They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men's shoulders, but will they lift a finger to move them? Not they! 4 They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay [them] on men's shoulders; but they [themselves] will not move them with one of their fingers.
5 They do all their deeds to be seen by others; for they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long. 5 All their works are performed to be seen. They widen their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels.5 But all their works they do to be seen of men: for they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,5 Everything they do is done to attract attention, like wearing broader phylacteries and longer tassels,5 "Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long;5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
6 They love to have the place of honor at banquets and the best seats in the synagogues, 6 They love places of honor at banquets, seats of honor in synagogues,6 and love the chief place at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,6 like wanting to take the place of honor at banquets and the front seats in the synagogues, 6 they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues;6 And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
7 and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have people call them rabbi. 7 greetings in marketplaces, and the salutation 'Rabbi.'7 and the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called of men, Rabbi.7 being greeted obsequiously in the market squares and having people call them Rabbi. 7 they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called 'Rabbi' by others.7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
8 But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all students. 8 As for you, do not be called 'Rabbi.' You have but one teacher, and you are all brothers.8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your teacher, and all ye are brethren.8 "You, however, must not allow yourselves to be called Rabbi, since you have only one Master, and you are all brothers. 8 "But you are not to be called 'Rabbi,' for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers.8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, [even] Christ; and all ye are brethren.
9 And call no one your father on earth, for you have one Father - the one in heaven. 9 Call no one on earth your father; you have but one Father in heaven.9 And call no man your father on the earth: for one is your Father, even he who is in heaven.9 You must call no one on earth your father, since you have only one Father, and he is in heaven. 9 And do not call anyone on earth 'father,' for you have one Father, and he is in heaven.9 And call no [man] your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
