Adjective ponēros (bad, evil, wicked) in the Gospels-Acts

(Translation from NRSV for the New Testament with a few modifications for a more litteral meaning)


Matthew

5: 11"Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil (ponēros) against you falsely on my account.
5: 37Let your word be 'Yes, Yes' or 'No, No'; anything more than this comes from the evil (ponēros) one.
5: 39But I say to you, Do not resist to evil (ponēros). But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also;
5: 45so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil (ponēros) and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous.
6: 13And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil (ponēros) one.
6: 23but if your eye is evil (ponēros), your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
7: 11If you then, who are evil (ponēros), know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him!
7: 17In the same way, every good tree bears good fruit, but the rotten tree bears bad (ponēros) fruit.

Mark

Luke

3: 19But Herod the ruler, who had been rebuked by him because of Herodias, his brother's wife, and because of all the evil (ponēros) things that Herod had done,

John

3: 19And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil (ponēros).
7: 7The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify against it that its works are evil (ponēros).

Acts

17: 5But the Jews became jealous, and with the help of some ruffians in the marketplaces they formed some evil (ponēros) men and set the city in an uproar. While they were searching for Paul and Silas to bring them out to the assembly, they attacked Jason's house.

19: 12so that when the handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his skin were brought to the sick, their diseases left them, and the evil (ponēros) spirits came out of them.
19: 13Then some itinerant Jewish exorcists tried to use the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil (ponēros) spirits, saying, "I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims."
19: 15But the evil (ponēros) spirit said to them in reply, "Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?"
19: 16Then the man with the evil (ponēros) spirit leaped on them, mastered them all, and so overpowered them that they fled out of the house naked and wounded.
25: 18When the accusers stood up, they did not charge him with any of the evil (ponēros) (things) that I was expecting.
28: 21They replied, "We have received no letters from Judea about you, and none of the brothers coming here has reported or spoken anything evil (ponēros) about you.

1 John

2: 13I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young people, because you have conquered the evil (ponēros) one.

3: 12We must not be like Cain who was from the evil (ponēros) one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil (ponēros) and his brother's righteous.
5: 18We know that those who are born of God do not sin, but the one who was born of God protects them, and the evil (ponēros) one does not touch them.
5: 19We know that we are God's children, and that the whole world lies under the power of the evil (ponēros) one.

2 John

1: 11for to welcome is to participate in the evil (ponēros) deeds of such a person.

3 John

1: 10So if I come, I will call attention to what he is doing in spreading evil (ponēros) (things) against us. And not content with those charges, he refuses to welcome the friends, and even prevents those who want to do so and expels them from the church.
