Verb mellō (to be about to) in the Gospels-Acts

(Translation from NRSV for the New Testament with a few modifications for a more literal meaning)


Matthew

2: 13Now after they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to (mellō) search for the child, to destroy him."
3: 7But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath that is about to come (mellō)?
11: 14and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is about to come (mellō).
12: 32Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age that is about to come (mellō).
16: 27"For the Son of Man is about to (mellō) come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay everyone for what has been done.
17: 12but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but they did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of Man is about to (mellō) suffer at their hands."
17: 22As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is about to (mellō) be betrayed into human hands,
20: 22But Jesus answered, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to (mellō) drink?" They said to him, "We are able."
24: 6And you are about to (mellō) hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that you are not alarmed; for this must take place, but the end is not yet.

Mark

10: 32They were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them; they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. He took the twelve aside again and began to tell them what is about to (mellō) happen to him,
13: 4"Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to (mellō) be accomplished?"

Luke

3: 7John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath that is about to come (mellō)?
7: 2A centurion there had a slave whom he valued highly, and who was ill and was about to (mellō) die.
9: 31They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to (mellō) accomplish at Jerusalem.
9: 44"Let these words sink into your ears: The Son of Man is about to (mellō) be betrayed into human hands."
10: 1After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself was about to (mellō) go.
13: 9If it is about to (mellō) bear fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.'"
19: 4So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because he was about to (mellō) pass that way.

John

Acts

23: 20He answered, "The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though they were about to (mellō) inquire more thoroughly into his case.

28: 6They were expecting him to be about to (mellō) swell up or drop dead, but after they had waited a long time and saw that nothing unusual had happened to him, they changed their minds and began to say that he was a god.
