The adjective kalos (good) in the Gospels-Acts

(Translation from NRSV for the New Testament with a few modifications for a more literal meaning)


Matthew

3: 10Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good (kalos) fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
5: 16In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good (kalos) works and give glory to your Father in heaven.
7: 17In the same way, every healthy tree bears good (kalos) fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit.
7: 18A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good (kalos) fruit.
7: 19Every tree that does not bear good (kalos) fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
12: 33"Either make the tree good (kalos), and its fruit good (kalos); or make the tree bad, and its fruit bad; for the tree is known by its fruit.
13: 8Other seeds fell on good (kalos) soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
13: 23But as for what was sown on good (kalos) soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty."
13: 24He put before them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to someone who sowed good (kalos) seed in his field;
13: 27And the slaves of the householder came and said to him, 'Master, did you not sow good (kalos) seed in your field? Where, then, did these weeds come from?'
13: 37He answered, "The one who sows the good (kalos) seed is the Son of Man;
13: 38the field is the world, and the good (kalos) seed are the children of the kingdom; the weeds are the children of the evil one,
13: 45"Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine (kalos) pearls;
13: 48when it was full, they drew it ashore, sat down, and put the good (kalos) into baskets but threw out the bad.
15: 26He answered, "It is not fair (kalos) to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs."
17: 4Then Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good (kalos) for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."
18: 8"If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away; it is better (kalos) for you to enter life maimed or lame than to have two hands or two feet and to be thrown into the eternal fire.
18: 9And if your eye causes you to stumble, tear it out and throw it away; it is better (kalos) for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and to be thrown into the hell of fire.
26: 10But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, "Why do you trouble the woman? She has performed a good (kalos) service for me.
26: 24The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that one by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better (kalos) for that one not to have been born."

Mark

4: 20And these are the ones sown on the good (kalos) soil: they hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirty and sixty and a hundredfold."

9: 50Salt is good (kalos); but if salt has lost its saltiness, how can you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another."
14: 6But Jesus said, "Let her alone; why do you trouble her? She has performed a good (kalos) service for me.

Luke

8: 15But as for that in the good (kalos) soil, these are the ones who, when they hear the word, hold it fast in an honest and good (kalos) heart, and bear fruit with patient endurance.
9: 33Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is good (kalos) for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah" - not knowing what he said.
14: 34"Salt is good (kalos); but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored?
21: 5When some were speaking about the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful (kalos) stones and gifts dedicated to God, he said,

John

2: 10and said to him, "Everyone serves the good (kalos) wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good (kalos) wine until now."

Acts
