Expression idou (behold) in the Gospels-Acts

(Translation from NRSV for the New Testament with a few modifications for a more literal meaning)


Matthew

1: 20But just when he had resolved to do this, behold (idou) an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
1: 23"Behold (idou), the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel," which means, "God is with us."
2: 1In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, behold (idou), wise men from the East came to Jerusalem,
2: 9When they had heard the king, they set out; and behold (idou), ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was.
2: 13Now after they had left, behold (idou), an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him."
2: 19When Herod died, behold (idou), an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said,
3: 16And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, behold (idou) the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him.
3: 17And behold (idou) a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased."
4: 11Then the devil left him, and behold (idou) angels came and waited on him.
7: 4Or how can you say to your neighbor, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' and behold (idou) the log is in your own eye?
8: 2and behold (idou) there was a leper who came to him and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, if you choose, you can make me clean."
8: 24And behold (idou) a windstorm arose on the sea, so great that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep.
8: 29And behold (idou) they shouted, "What have you to do with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?"
8: 32And he said to them, "Go!" So they came out and entered the swine; and behold (idou), the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and perished in the water.
8: 34And behold (idou) the whole town came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their neighborhood.
9: 2And behold (idou) some people were carrying a paralyzed man lying on a bed. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven."
9: 3And behold (idou) some of the scribes said to themselves, "This man is blaspheming."
9: 10And as he sat at dinner in the house, and behold (idou) many tax collectors and sinners came and were sitting with him and his disciples.
9: 18While he was saying these things to them, behold (idou) a leader of the synagogue came in and knelt before him, saying, "My daughter has just died; but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live."
9: 20And behold (idou) a woman who had been suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his cloak,
9: 32After they had gone away, behold (idou) a demoniac who was mute was brought to him.
10: 16"Behold (idou), I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.
11: 8What then did you go out to see? Someone dressed in soft robes? Behold (idou), those who wear soft robes are in royal palaces.
11: 10This is the one about whom it is written, 'Behold (idou), I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.'
11: 19the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Behold (idou), a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds."
12: 2When the Pharisees saw it, they said to him, " Behold (idou), your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the sabbath."
12: 10and behold (idou) a man was there with a withered hand, and they asked him, "Is it lawful to cure on the sabbath?" so that they might accuse him.
12: 18"Behold (idou) my servant, whom I have chosen, my beloved, with whom my soul is well pleased. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles.
12: 41The people of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the proclamation of Jonah, and behold (idou), something greater than Jonah is here!
12: 42The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon, and behold (idou), something greater than Solomon is here!
12: 46While he was still speaking to the crowds, behold (idou) his mother and his brothers were standing outside, wanting to speak to him.
12: 47Someone told him, "Behold (idou), your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you."
12: 49And pointing to his disciples, he said, "Behold (idou) my mother and my brothers!
13: 3And he told them many things in parables, saying: "Behold (idou)! A sower went out to sow.
15: 22And behold (idou) a Canaanite woman from that region came out and started shouting, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is tormented by a demon."
17: 3And behold (idou) there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him.
17: 5While he was still speaking, behold (idou) a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold (idou) from the cloud a voice said, "This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!"
19: 16And behold (idou) someone came to him and said, "Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?"
19: 27Then Peter said in reply, "Behold (idou), we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?"
20: 18"Behold (idou), we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death;
20: 30And behold (idou) there were two blind men sitting by the roadside. When they heard that Jesus was passing by, they shouted, "Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!"
21: 5"Tell the daughter of Zion, Behold (idou), your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey."
22: 4Again he sent other slaves, saying, 'Tell those who have been invited: Behold (idou), I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready; come to the wedding banquet.'
23: 34Therefore, behold (idou), I send you prophets, sages, and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town,
23: 38Behold (idou), your house is left to you, desolate.
24: 23Then if anyone says to you, 'Behold (idou)! Here is the Messiah!' or 'There he is!' - do not believe it.
24: 25Behold (idou), I have told you beforehand.
24: 26So, if they say to you, 'Behold (idou)! He is in the wilderness,' do not go out. If they say, 'Behold (idou)! He is in the inner rooms,' do not believe it.
25: 6But at midnight there was a shout, 'Behold (idou)! Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.'
26: 45Then he came to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Behold (idou), the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
26: 46Get up, let us be going. Behold (idou), my betrayer is at hand."
26: 47While he was still speaking, behold (idou), Judas, one of the twelve, arrived; with him was a large crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people.
26: 51And behold (idou), one of those with Jesus put his hand on his sword, drew it, and struck the slave of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
27: 51And behold (idou), the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, and the rocks were split.
28: 2And behold (idou) there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord, descending from heaven, came and rolled back the stone and sat on it.
28: 7Then go quickly and tell his disciples, 'He has been raised from the dead, and behold (idou) he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him.' Behold (idou), I told you."
28: 9And behold (idou) Jesus met them and said, "Greetings!" And they came to him, took hold of his feet, and worshiped him.
28: 11While they were going, behold (idou) some of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests everything that had happened.
28: 20and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And behold (idou), I am with you always, to the end of the age."

Mark

1: 2As it is written in the prophet Isaiah, "Behold (idou), I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way;
3: 32A crowd was sitting around him; and they said to him, " Behold (idou), your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside, asking for you."
4: 3"Behold (idou)! A sower went out to sow.
10: 28Peter began to say to him, "Behold (idou), we have left everything and followed you."
10: 33saying, "Behold (idou), we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death; then they will hand him over to the Gentiles;
14: 41He came a third time and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Enough! The hour has come; behold (idou), the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
14: 42Get up, let us be going. Behold (idou), my betrayer is at hand."

Luke

1: 20And behold (idou), because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time, you will become mute, unable to speak, until the day these things occur."
1: 31And behold (idou), you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus.
1: 36And behold (idou), your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren.

9: 38And behold (idou) a man from the crowd shouted, "Teacher, I beg you to look at my son; he is my only child.
9: 39And behold (idou) a spirit seizes him, and all at once he shrieks. It convulses him until he foams at the mouth; it mauls him and will scarcely leave him.
10: 3Go on your way. Behold (idou), I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves.
10: 19Behold (idou), I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you.
10: 25And behold (idou) a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he said, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
11: 31The queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon, and behold (idou), something greater than Solomon is here!

John

4: 35Do you not say, 'Four months more, then comes the harvest'? Behold (idou) I tell you, look around you, and see how the fields are ripe for harvesting.

10: 30Cornelius replied, "Four days ago at this very hour, at three o'clock, I was praying in my house and behold (idou) a man in dazzling clothes stood before me.
11: 11And behold (idou), at that very moment three men, sent to me from Caesarea, arrived at the house where we were.
12: 7And behold (idou) an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He tapped Peter on the side and woke him, saying, "Get up quickly." And the chains fell off his wrists.

20: 22And now behold (idou), as a captive to the Spirit, I am on my way to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there,
20: 25"And now behold (idou) I know that none of you, among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom, will ever see my face again.
27: 24and he said, 'Do not be afraid, Paul; you must stand before the emperor; and behold (idou), God has granted safety to all those who are sailing with you.'
