The noun polis (city) in the Gospels

(Translation from NRSV for the New Testament with a few modifications for a more literal meaning)


Matthew

2: 23There he made his home in a town (polis) called Nazareth, so that what had been spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled, "He will be called a Nazorean."
4: 5Then the devil took him to the holy city (polis) and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple,
5: 14"You are the light of the world. A city (polis) built on a hill cannot be hid.
5: 35or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city (polis) of the great King.
8: 33The swineherds ran off, and on going into the town (polis), they told the whole story about what had happened to the demoniacs.
8: 34Then the whole town (polis) came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their neighborhood.
9: 1And after getting into a boat he crossed the sea and came to his own town (polis).
9: 35Then Jesus went about all the cities (polis) and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness.
10: 5These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: "Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town (polis) of the Samaritans,
10: 11Whatever town (polis) or village you enter, find out who in it is worthy, and stay there until you leave.
10: 14If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet as you leave that house or town (polis).
10: 15Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town (polis).
10: 23When they persecute you in one town (polis), flee to the next; for truly I tell you, you will not have gone through all the towns (polis) of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
11: 1Now when Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and proclaim his message in their cities (polis).
11: 20Then he began to reproach the cities (polis) in which most of his deeds of power had been done, because they did not repent.
12: 25He knew what they were thinking and said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city (polis) or house divided against itself will stand.
14: 13Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns (polis).

Mark

1: 33And the whole city (polis) was gathered around the door.
1: 45But he went out and began to proclaim it freely, and to spread the word, so that Jesus could no longer go into a town (polis) openly, but stayed out in the country; and people came to him from every quarter.
5: 14The swineherds ran off and told it in the city (polis) and in the country. Then people came to see what it was that had happened.

Luke

1: 26In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town (polis) in Galilee called Nazareth,

2: 4Joseph also went from the town (polis) of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city (polis) of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David.
2: 11to you is born this day in the city (polis) of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord.
2: 39When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town (polis) of Nazareth.

8: 27As he stepped out on land, a man of the city (polis) who had demons met him. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he did not live in a house but in the tombs.

8: 39"Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you." So he went away, proclaiming throughout the city (polis) how much Jesus had done for him.

9: 10On their return the apostles told Jesus all they had done. He took them with him and withdrew privately to a city (polis) called Bethsaida.
10: 1After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town (polis) and place where he himself intended to go.
10: 8Whenever you enter a town (polis) and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you;
10: 10But whenever you enter a town (polis) and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and say,
10: 11'Even the dust of your town (polis) that clings to our feet, we wipe off in protest against you. Yet know this: the kingdom of God has come near.'

18: 2He said, "In a certain city (polis) there was a judge who neither feared God nor had respect for people.
18: 3In that city (polis) there was a widow who kept coming to him and saying, 'Grant me justice against my opponent.'
19: 17He said to him, 'Well done, good slave! Because you have been trustworthy in a very small thing, take charge of ten cities (polis).'
19: 19He said to him, 'And you, rule over five cities (polis).'
19: 41As he came near and saw the city (polis), he wept over it,
22: 10"Listen," he said to them, "when you have entered the city (polis), a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him into the house he enters
23: 19(This was a man who had been put in prison for an insurrection that had taken place in the city (polis), and for murder.)
23: 51This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
24: 49And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised; so stay here in the city (polis) until you have been clothed with power from on high."

John

1: 44Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city (polis) of Andrew and Peter.
4: 5So he came to a Samaritan city (polis) called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.

8: 8So there was great joy in that city (polis).

14: 20But when the disciples surrounded him, he got up and went into the city (polis). The next day he went on with Barnabas to Derbe.
14: 21After they had proclaimed the good news to that city (polis) and had made many disciples, they returned to Lystra, then on to Iconium and Antioch.
15: 21For in every city (polis), for generations past, Moses has had those who proclaim him, for he has been read aloud every sabbath in the synagogues."
15: 36After some days Paul said to Barnabas, "Come, let us return and visit the believers in every city (polis) where we proclaimed the word of the Lord and see how they are doing."
16: 4As they went from town (polis) to town (polis), they delivered to them for observance the decisions that had been reached by the apostles and elders who were in Jerusalem.

16: 20When they had brought them before the magistrates, they said, "These men are disturbing our city (polis); they are Jews
16: 39so they came and apologized to them. And they took them out and asked them to leave the city (polis).
17: 5But the Jews became jealous, and with the help of some ruffians in the marketplaces they formed a mob and set the city (polis) in an uproar. While they were searching for Paul and Silas to bring them out to the assembly, they attacked Jason's house.
17: 16While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was deeply distressed to see that the city (polis) was full of idols.
18: 10for I am with you, and no one will lay a hand on you to harm you, for there are many in this city (polis) who are my people."
19: 29The city (polis) was filled with the confusion; and people rushed together to the theater, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians who were Paul's travel companions.
19: 35But when the town (polis) clerk had quieted the crowd, he said, "Citizens of Ephesus, who is there that does not know that the city (polis) of the Ephesians is the temple keeper of the great Artemis and of the statue that fell from heaven?
20: 23except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city (polis) that imprisonment and persecutions are waiting for me.
21: 5When our days there were ended, we left and proceeded on our journey; and all of them, with wives and children, escorted us outside the city (polis). There we knelt down on the beach and prayed
21: 29For they had previously seen Trophimus the Ephesian with him in the city (polis), and they supposed that Paul had brought him into the temple.
21: 30Then all the city (polis) was aroused, and the people rushed together. They seized Paul and dragged him out of the temple, and immediately the doors were shut.
21: 39Paul replied, "I am a Jew, from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of an important city (polis); I beg you, let me speak to the people."
22: 3"I am a Jew, born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city (polis) at the feet of Gamaliel, educated strictly according to our ancestral law, being zealous for God, just as all of you are today.
24: 12They did not find me disputing with anyone in the temple or stirring up a crowd either in the synagogues or throughout the city (polis).
25: 23So on the next day Agrippa and Bernice came with great pomp, and they entered the audience hall with the military tribunes and the prominent men of the city (polis). Then Festus gave the order and Paul was brought in.
26: 11By punishing them often in all the synagogues I tried to force them to blaspheme; and since I was so furiously enraged at them, I pursued them even to foreign cities (polis).
27: 8Sailing past it with difficulty, we came to a place called Fair Havens, near the city (polis) of Lasea.
